Commuters on Hallandale Beach Boulevard had to be more vigilant than usual on Wednesday when they had to swerve their cars to keep from hitting a 2-year-old boy left there by his father.
The child was, thankfully, unharmed. But his father was arrested for child neglect after having simply left him in the 4200 block of West Hallandale Beach Boulevard, according to a BSO arrest report.
According to the report, a Broward Sheriff's Office deputy responded to a call about a boy being thrown onto the road out of a brown Pontiac Grand Am.
The child's father, Ronald Renelle Delancy, 25, of Miami, apparently was in the middle of a verbal spat with the child's mother, who was behind the wheel as they traveled eastbound on Hallandale Boulevard.
The trouble started when they decided to sit the child on Delancy's lap in a moving vehicle rather than, you know, in a child seat with a seat belt.
Somewhere along the way, the argument got so heated that Delancy up and decided to leap out of the car, according to the report.
During the argument, Delancy snatched a cell phone from his girlfriend's hand, causing her to swerve and slow down. That's when Delancy hopped out of the car and began running away, spilling the child onto the road in the process.
Witnesses told the BSO deputy that they saw the child as they were driving down the road and were forced to swerve to avoid hitting the boy.
The boy's mother was able to pick up the 2-year-old and take him to safety.
She then drove back to their home in Fort Lauderdale where she was able to speak to the deputy. According to the report, she saw Delancy driving off in a white Ford Taurus moments after arriving back home.
As the officer and his partner were collecting information on the incident from the mother, Delancy drove toward the home. The officer asked Delancy several times to exit the vehicle and show his hands.
Delancy resisted by bracing his arms.
As the officers tried to cuff him, Delancy yelled out, "All you want to do is shoot a n***er; what's this for?"
The officers commanded him to get on the ground, but Delancy again resisted.
He was eventually arrested and charged with child neglect and resisting arrest without violence.
Delancy faced a judge on Thursday and explained that he was just trying to walk away from the argument with the child's mother. According to records, his bond was set at $1,000.
