A West Palm Beach man is in critical condition after he jumped from a moving Tri-Rail train when he realized he had left his cell phone on the station bench and tried to retrieve it Monday night.
The man, 26-year-old Eddie Diaz, reportedly broke through the train's emergency doors and leaped off just as the train was taking off from the downtown West Palm station on 201 S. Tamarind Ave.
According to West Palm Beach Police, witnesses say Diaz seemed to realize he left his cell on a bench just as the train took off and proceeded to break the glass for the emergency safety mechanism.
Diaz then reached in, pulled the emergency stop lever, and jumped through the train's front passenger door.
But when he jumped, Diaz apparently lost his footing and landed on the southbound platform, where he reportedly injured his head.
Paramedics were called in and transported Diaz to a local hospital.
Meanwhile, passengers were stuck on the train for about two hours while police investigated the accident.
