No. 79: Cheesesteak From Sonny's Famous Steak Hogies

Sonny's is what you might call an institution -- it has been sitting in the same

quaint spot just north of Taft Street for 51 years now. It's a family

joint, with papa Sonny having passed down his legacy to his sonny, John

Nigro, who's continued the fine tradition of honest, blue-collar food

prepared exactingly. Sonny's is best known for its

Philadelphia-style steak hogies (not "hoagies"), cut from rib eye beef

and wedged into a crusty roll made on premises each day. You can get 'em wit (that's wit onions) or without, or with cheese or even spicy marinara sauce. Sonny's recently even started serving that Philly classic, Cheese Whiz, on their steaks. Not only are they outstanding hogies, but they're cheap too: under $7 for a huge portion of overflowing steak and cheese.
