No. 84: Chicken From La Granja
For one of the cheapest meals available in South Florida, the open-pit grilled chicken at La Granja restaurants is also one of the tastiest you can get. It's simple: either a quarter or half grilled chicken, skin taut and full of spices, meat juicy and tender, is dishes alongside a mound of perfectly-cooked yellow rice and a bowl of black beans, all for under $5 at lunch time. The plate tastes great on its own, but with the addition of La Granja's multitude of sauces, the chicken goes stratospheric. Our favorite addition is a garlicky salsa of chopped onions and cilantro, poured over a half a bird and eaten at a pace that could set a land speed record. Add some yucca fritta and a few squirts of hot rocoto sauce and the meal is complete. There are some 15 La Granjas throughout South Florida, and each of them is a ticket to pollo paradise.
