No. 45: Coco Bread from Charlie's Pastries
It doesn't make much sense to wrap a piece of starch inside another piece of starch,
unless, of course, the first thing is a Jamaican beef patty and the
second is coco bread, preferably from Charlie's Pastries in Lauderhill
(4265 NW 12th St., Lauderhill, 954-587-8828). The Jamaican bakery is
packed throughout the day with folks ordering spicy beef, chicken
curry, and even vegetable patties along with plenty of sweet, warm,
buttery coco bread to wrap them in. The coco bread makes the combo.
It's dense and fluffy, and Charlie's makes it fresh every day. There's
no coconut in it, as one would expect. Just sugar and butter and flour
and love. Those in the know always get one more piece than the number
of patties. A single piece of coco bread makes a great dessert too.
