No. 47: Vegetarian Reuben From Sara's
Sara's in Hollywood is a vegetarian Mecca (or is that Jerusalem?), a place that makes
all it's own meat substitutes and even does calzones and pizzas with
vegan cheese. Even for a meat-eater, the stuff tastes good. Its Reuben
sandwich utilizes the classic combo of corned beef, sauerkraut, melty
cheese, and thousand island dressing -- but it's all vegetarian (or
vegan if you prefer). The faux corned beef has a great texture and
flavor, and the sandwich is gooey and satisfying in ways few vegetarian
meals are. It comes on either rye or house made challah that's
out-of-this-world good. The only thing funky about Sara's s the hours:
Closed on Friday nights for temple, open late Saturdays for post
service noshing. Actually, that's not such a bad thing at all.
