84. Tacos From Alegria Tacos
There's no horchata, but there's Mexican soda. There are too few seats, but plenty of good company. There's little that's scenic but plenty of color at Alegria Tacos on North Andrews Avenue.
"They make their own tortillas here," said the woman sitting at the table near the door. I eventually sat down with her for an impromptu lunch hour with a stranger. And she was right: homemade tortillas are a detail that makes these tacos among the most delicious cheap eats in town.
Fat and savory meat with a little bit of heat heat joins tomatoes, cilantro, and lime in the chorizo tacos. Served with salsa fresca and hot sauce, they're satiating on their own. Ask for avocado and the extra-hot sauce for more layered flavors. While there's lengua, pollo, asada, and the runner-up carnitas on the menu, the chorizo taco will be your go-to.
