Misfit Home Brewers have been prepping for New Times Beerfest, where they'll offer 105 gallons of home brew at their tents this Saturday.
George Garcia started it all, brewing in college as a means of drinking cheap beer five years ago. Last year, he gathered Piero Rodriguez, and Robert Tejon to form Misfit Home Brewers.
The brewing rigs for these guys look like a dubious experiment, with tubes and buckets and bottles and such. "We definitely have war stories," said Garcia, citing a middle of the night bedroom closet explosion during fermentation. "There was yeast and beer everywhere."
Misfit Brewers landed on the map because of a phone call. "Last October, we just called up New Times to see if they had room for us at the festival," said Garcia. The result was a winning nod for the Bust a Nut Porter, a peanut butter and chocolate concoction.
Those of you who have tried Misfit's brews can attest their skills are coming along. Among flavors to try on Saturday are the Wheat R Melon and Pineapple X Press IPA. If you arrive early enough, there may be samples of one of their first batches of sour beers.
The New Times 15th-annual Beerfest is this Saturday from 6 to 11 p.m. at Huizenga Plaza in downtown Fort Lauderdale.
