This week, we're taking a trip to Pompano Beach where Bangin' Banjo Brewing founder Adam Feingold is doing a special release for his take on an American strong ale, a catchall term for any style of beer ranging from 7 percent alcohol by volume and above.
Dubbed Pure Unfiltered Justice, the beer is aptly named, says Feingold, a real American beauty that goes on tap and will be sold by the bottle just in time for the Fourth of July. The perfect all-American
Bangin' Banjo, which opened in late July last year, was the first craft brewery in Pompano Beach — followed closely by nearby 26 Degree Brewing Co. — and has already proved to be a favorite with Broward County locals for many of its flagship brews like the Cypress Creek Cream Ale, Gose Getter, Hop of the Muffin American IPA, and
While the facility distributes product to bars and restaurants across Broward and Palm Beach counties, it hasn't started production canning or bottling quite yet. Still, Feingold is excited about the first phase of such endeavors: a plan to bottle and release seasonal and specialty brews throughout the year.
It began with the brewery's first release, the Chocolate Banana Milk Shake, an imperial stout that went on sale in the taproom on Friday, May 20, and sold out in just a few hours. Now, Bangin' Banjo is about to go live with its second specialty release, Pure Unfiltered Justice, which goes on sale Saturday, June 25, at the brewery taproom.
The small-batch, hand-bottled brew is limited to just 250 bottles, so be sure to get there early. If you miss the sale, you can get a glass or growler fill while on-tap supplies last.
Touted as a strong, full-flavored American ale, this beer challenges the palate with a substantial number of malty, hoppy flavors. Made with American hops, yeast, and malt, the beer pours a deep amber hue and dials in at 9.6 percent abv, resulting in a powerful aroma that's just a touch boozy.
It hits the tongue with a complex malty base, which moves from sweet honeyed bread to more nutty-forward notes. The finish ties a bow around the flavor with a well-rounded bitterness that complements the foundation of hops. While the flavors are bold, strong, and rich, they're also very well balanced and complementary.
It's always exciting to see a brewery open and succeed in the local craft market. But it's even more exciting to see one doing specialty releases for the first time for the fans. If you're into collecting, here's one to save for that next bottle share.
