This past weekend, on the evening of May 6 in the Terrace Ballroom at the Philadelphia Convention Center, Funky Buddha Brewery took home a gold medal at the World Beer Cup, an international biennial event awarding the best in the industry.

With over 200 highly qualified professional beer judges from across the world scrutinizing beers in over 90 style categories, it's pretty much regarded as the Olympics of beer competitions.

Our local brewers from Oakland Park managed to win the top prize in the Specialty Beer category with their Maple Bacon Coffee Porter, one of the most sought-after and highly rated beers in the world, according to consumers. It's now been declared an industry best.

The brewery posted shortly after winning:
"Maple Bacon Coffee Porter has just won the GOLD MEDAL in the specialty beer category at the World Beer Cup! Congratulations to the entire Brewery and all who work their butts off each and every day! And thank you to our fans whose support has brought us here! #Cheers #GetFunky"
In addition to Funky Buddha, a couple of other Florida-based breweries were recognized for their outstanding beers: La Fete by 7venth Sun Brewery in Dunedin won a Silver in Session Beer, Gaspar's Porter by Florida Beer Co. in Cape Canaveral won a Silver in Robust Porter, Thunder Axe by Brew Hub in Lakeland won a Bronze in Chili Beer, and Cranberry Beet Wild Night by Swamp Head Brewery in Gainesville won a Bronze in Field Beer.

Funky Buddha is located at 1201 NE 38th St, Oakland Park. Call 954-440-0046, or visit funkybuddhabrewery.com
