Our annual food guide, Taste, hits newsstands Thursday, February 19. In this year's issue, you'll find guides to local food neighborhoods; interviews with local coffee roasters, chefs, and chocolatiers; and a handy roundup of South Florida's breweries. It's just a cup of coffee, right? That dark, bitter, caffeine-laden beverage that makes our morning commute more tolerable and our hangover headaches pound just a little less.

Sadly, for too long coffee has been the beverage that we don't appreciate as craft. But all that's changing now. As the country embraces everything local, fresh, artisanal, and craft -- why have we not yet done the same with coffee?

In South Florida, the third-wave coffee movement is catching on, transitioning coffee drinkers from nonfat vanilla lattes to more elevated brew so artfully crafted that it's meant to be savored black, without cream or sugar.

Finally, American coffee culture has arrived in the Sunshine State, and we're starting to wake up and smell the coffee. The real coffee. In the past year, a number of local roasters have raised the java bar for those who want more than what the big chain game players have to offer.

Here, we list the latest in local coffee shops across Broward and Palm Beach counties where you can get your fresh-roasted fix.
