In downtown West Palm Beach, on a main street filled with dozens of restaurants and cuisine, a new gastropub-themed establishment has taken root. Known as J. Flynn's Irish gastropub, it's taken up space between the newly opened Oli's Fashion Cuisine and the soon-to-close Dr. Feelgoods club off Clematis Street.

Designed to evoke the dining experience of the famed pubs of Dublin, this new 4,500-square-foot restaurant endeavors to bring a taste of Ireland to South Florida. Co-owners and brother-sister team Elaine and John Flynn, both Ireland natives, enlisted the help of Cleve Mash and consulting chef Frank Eucalitto -- chef-owner of the Palm Beach Gardens restaurant Café Chardonnay -- to create what they term a "modern, gourmet-inspired take" on the Irish pub experience.

The menu is what you would expect from an Ireland native, with a good selection of traditional Irish dishes, each given a mini-makeover. Dishes range from starters and salads and sandwiches, to a number of small and large plates and desserts. A few examples: sweet corn and crab fritters with honey mustard dipping sauce, a puff pastry wrapped Ruben sandwich, and a non-traditional bangers and mash with chicken sausage roasted with garlic, onions and Tuscan olive oil over roasted garlic mashed potatoes. Looking for something a bit more authentic? Staples like fish and chips and shepard's pie can also be found. For those with food allergies, gluten-free pasta and bread are available.

"We wanted patrons to have a true, Dublin pub experience--from the details in the design and furnishings, to the lively atmosphere with televisions showcasing football and World Cup, Euro Cup and English Premier League," said Flynn. "But our stand-out feature is our incredible menu. We've definitely taken it up a notch from what you'd find in traditional Irish pubs. It's different, contemporary and delicious, while ensuring it's still affordable and approachable."

Formerly the space known as Bobby Sue Barbecue, J. Flynn's carefully crafted interior was completely renovated to capture the vibe of Dublin with rich, intricate wood, classic luxe leather couches and plenty of high-top seating. There are also 10 high-def TVs surrounding the space, including the 40-foot bar.

Typical of authentic Irish pubs, the menu boasts a number of specialty crafted cocktails from a resident mixologist on staff, eight draft beers, including Irish and craft beers, a selection of more than 20 wines to complement the menu, and a wide range of liquor. Whatever it is you're looking for, you can find it here.
