Wine pairing dinners are nothing new. In fact, we probably see at least one per week.

And that's certainly not a bad thing.

Wine and a history lesson though? That does not come around often. Later this month, Vic & Angelo's will be hosting a, Italian wine dinner featuring Livernano and Casalvento wines from Italy. Wine rep Julie Butcher and Executive Chef Erick Miranda will be on-site, walking participants through the wines and pairings.

So what's the big deal with these wines? Livernano, which was once a town, has been inhabited for about 2500 years ago -- a fact that should excite even novice history buffs.

Starting at 7:30 p.m., on Thursday, June 27, the dinner will pair Livernano and Casalvento wines -- the vineyards are neighboring estates in the Radda district of Chianti Classico -- to four courses prepared by the team at Vic & Angelo's.

For $75 per person, the pairings include pan-seared diver scallops with baby spinach, wild mushrooms, diced tomatoes, basil & white truffle butter sauce paired with 2011 Livernano L'Anima; crispy iceberg wedge with crumbled gorgonzola, red onion, cherry tomatoes, crispy pancetta & balsamic honey dressing paired with 2008 Casalvento Chianti Classico; crispy half Long Isand duck with sweet potatoes, crispy vegetables & balsamic reduction paired with 2008 Casalvento Janus; and cheesecake with berry coulis & whipped cream paired with Casalvento "The Dream."

"Livernano is a very well recognized bed and breakfast with a Michelin rated chef -- the food is incredible," said Butcher, "It dates back to the Etruscans [an ancient civilization circa 500 BC] and was itself an entire town. It had the responsibility of baking bread for the surrounding towns. Casalvento is the adjoining property."

The wineries and the estates on which they sit are now owned by Palm Beach homeowners, Bob and Gudrun Cuillo. The couple bought Casalvento in 1997, releasing its first vintage in 2004.

They purchased the Livernano property shortly after. It is now home to a bed & breakfast and farm which produces olive oil, honey, fruit and veggies, and, of course, wine.

Tickets to the dinner must be purchased in advance. Pre-payment is required and space is limited.

Vic & Angelo's is located at 290 E. Atlantic Ave. in Delray Beach. Call 561-278-9570, or visit vicandangelos.com.
