Despite that it's a modest shop in a market with sandwiches made from old reliable Boar's Head, My Market lures me in with delicious sandwiches and local characters.

For the past couple of weeks, I've been meaning to go back for the Market Po'Boy, the shop's version with turkey or roast beef with gravy. Each time I hit the counter, I'm besieged with guilt. Do I really need gravy? I'm not really a gravy girl. And I'd just wrapped up a decadent dinner at 1500 Degrees in the Eden Roc last night (more on that next week). So I defected, especially since the shop has a "No Po'Boys to Go" policy because it's so messy.

Today I asked the deli guy to choose for me, and this is what he picked:

The $6.99 Market Eggplant Special with grilled eggplant, balsamic, basil, melted fresh mozzarella, caramelized onions, and tomato. It was delicious but not quite as gustatory an experience as the Po'Boy would have been. Still, bread from Cusano's is almost as good as bread from Gran Forno.

"How is that? I was going to get it, but then I decided to go with my regular," asked the engineer sitting across from me, annoyed his text message kept beckoning. He's been a My Market customer since he moved here a few years ago from Atlanta.

Even at 2 p.m. after the lunch rush, My Market pulls in all kinds.
