People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA for short, has been accused of going overboard and using heavy-handed publicity stunts for getting its message across.
That may be true, but the organization, led by founder Ingrid Newkirk, does the one thing it sets out to do -- it makes people acutely aware of both the organization and its causes.
Its outrageous campaigns can almost be called "performance art", like when nude models smear themselves in red paint and pack themselves into giant foam meat trays or campaign to have grouper renamed "sea puppies" because no one would want to eat a puppy.

Still, PETA is the largest and most outspoken animal rights organization in the world, with over three million members, including many celebrities like Pamela Anderson, Dave Navarro, and Sir Paul McCartney. And, for every graphic video that shows animals being tortured, there's one like this where Ronald McDonald talks to Jiminy Glick about his kid being a little overweight:
Ingrid Newkirk is coming to Fort Lauderdale this Friday, October 25 at 7 p.m. to talk about animal rights in a one-woman show of sorts, called The Naked Truth. In her own words, Newkirk will "offer some controversial, truthful, and thought-provoking conversation as I share my thoughts with you about animals, our relationship with them, and how that relationship can and should evolve from here".
Tickets for the show at the Abdo New River Room at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts range from $10 - $60 for non-members and includes a ten percent off certificate for dinner at Sublime. Tickets are available at PETA.org/NakedTruthFortLauderdale.
Sublime's owner, Nanci Alexander, will host a Q&A session with Newkirk directly after the show.
