• Even as local restaurant maestro Burt Rapoport readies his new Deck 84 for a November debut, a pair of other eateries on restaurant-rich Atlantic Avenue have gone out with the tide. Sonoma Café & Bistro is history, as is sleek 'n' trendy Blue Fish, a restaurant that always seemed to be swimming upstream no matter what its owners tried.

• Not many high schools have their own culinary program; even fewer have their own restaurant. But West Boca Raton High School not only has an Academy of Culinary Arts that's trained more than 300 students in culinary basics in its massive kitchen; it also will soon have Calaloo Café, a tropical-themed eatery set to debut next week. Culinary-arts students will staff the front and back of the house, though diners are limited to local business and media types, and donors to the program.

Reef Road Restaurant and Rum Bar continues to fight off suckitude with a new lunch menu and lunchtime specials as well as a full roster of live bands and mixological cocktails. On the menu are a tiki salad with dried cranberries, slivered almonds, Gorgonzola cheese, and honey-lime vinaigrette and a bacon cheeseburger with sautéed mushrooms and caramelized onions. Half a sandwich, cup o' soup, or side dish or salad is $7 at lunch.
