  • Hangin' With Ace Hood

Last night, South Florida's fastest rising rap star, Ace Hood, had a CD signing at the Best Buy in Pembroke Pines. The event was well attended and a lot of people came out to support the young rapper as he continues to climb the ladder of fame. There weren't a lot of celebrities on hand, but DJ Khaled was there broadcasting live for WEDR and Rick Ross stopped by for a bit to hang out along with Ball Greezy, and Grindmode. Ace sat atop an elevated platform signing CDs for at least 300 fans and

  • The Joy of Madlib

With only two days to go until West Coast super DJ/Producer Madlib the Badkid, arrives in Miami for a show at Blacksheep Bar on December 4th, I'm personally excited to see how Miami reacts to him. There are times when he gets audiences like the one in the video above. It's a three minute clip from the last time he was in Miami at the Raleigh Hotel for WMC and the crowd looks about as live as a corpse. They loosen up after awhile, but it's of course, more evidence on why sometimes, WMC parties

  • Thug Sinatra's Back, Now at Provocateur, Starting Friday

If you read Crossfade or New Times at all, you'll know that John Hood is a regular contributor (and a regular man-about-town). But long ago, before I was his "boss" (although nobody is really the Hood's boss), I happened upon one of his Thug Sinatra evenings, then at the old Harrison's steak restaurant on South Beach. For a classy group of people, renaissance man Hood crooned, Rat Pack-style, some decidedly un-classy songs. Rick Ross' "Hustlin,'" for instance, takes on new life when sung by a w

  • On The List - New Trend Alert Edition

With the economy going way south, it seems like the nightlife industry is starting to implement new business tactics. Bottle service is surely going the way of the dinosaur, and the industry knows if it's going to survive its got to find untapped market.Enter in the downtown hipster promoters.Often relegated to the seedy downtown/Overtown nightclub scene, it seems they are now in vogue with South Beach's nightlife impresarios. Poplife hosts now at Louis on Tuesdays and Rokbar on Thursdays, whil

26-year-old Miami wunderkind Lee Cipolla called The Juice from Los Angeles, where he recently sold two of his independently made films to Grindstone Entertainment, with DVD distribution by Lionsgate Home Entertainment. One of the films, Know thy Enemy, has been a hit in Blockbusters and Best Buys from coast to coast since its release in May; the other, Harder they Fall, hits stores today. The lovely and talented Cipolla was game for a little Q&A.What were you like in high school in Miami? I
