  • Another Newspaper Falls Into Bankruptcy

The Minneapolis Star Tribune followed the Tribune Co. and went into Chapter 11 bankruptcy today. Remember, Miami Herald parent McClatchy, in the only good move it has made in several years, sold the Strib, as it is called, for $530 million back in 2006. The newspaper's story includes some interesting numbers:   In its filing, the newspaper listed assets of $493.2 million and liabilities of $661.1 million. Like most newspapers, the Star Tribune has experienced a sharp decline in print

  • The Broward County Commission Is A Nest Of Whores

I've decided to go with more blunt and truthful headlines ... can you tell? The inspiration for this one is the passing of lobbyist Ron Book's initiative to bring more money to the county's bail bondsmen at the expense of our tax dollars. Book, who represents the bondsmen, has been working on the commission to curtail the successful pretrial release program so that more people have to pay bail. The disgusting part: Book is also employed by the county commission as a paid lob

  • And The Next Davie Mayor is ...

Prediction: Judy Paul will win the Davie mayoral election over Tom Truex.     Will Paul (at left next to white-hatted Ron Bergeron) be Davie's next mayor? This is an almost blind forecast based upon a single quote in Laura Figueroa's story on the race in Sunday's Miami Herald. The quote come from the incumbent Truex: "It's a shame that the mayor's race is turning into a referendum on The Commons." First off, the sentiment from Truex is asinine. Why would he rue

  • Broward Commissioners on Ethics Bill: WhatEVER

In a conversation that seems to have been recorded at the cafeteria lunch table where the in crowd sits, Broward Mayor Stacy Ritter and Commissioner Ken Keechl decided that fellow Commissioner John Rodstrom is not in-crowd material. That's because Rodstrom's pushing a bill that would bar commissioners from calling upon their political connections to raise money for other political campaigns and third-party charitable organizations. It's the second excerpt in this Sun-Sentinel post from Ritter's

  • Dubious Port Tank Deal A Bernie Friedman Special?

A county selection committee today chose a Brazillian firm called Cepemar Environmental Services to take over the tank field at Port Everglades. It's a big deal -- and already reeks of undue influence by a key lobbyist.      The firm, represented by lobbyist Bernie Friedman, will pay the county $1 million a year for 30 years and promised to pump in $30 million in improvements to the 60-year-old facility. Commissioners Sue Gunzburger and Ken Keechl put Cepemar over the

  • Ritter Speaks! (Out of Both Sides of Mouth)

RitterIt's strange to be astonished at the news that this county's mayor actually gave an interview, but so it goes in Broward. Stacy Ritter has been refusing interviews with reporters for much of 2009, in vain hopes that she can keep her associations with con man Joel Steinger out of the news. Impossible, given the interest that New Times' Bob Norman has taken in the subject. His most recent article appeared in last week's print edition. And perhaps Daily Pulp will have a take on Ritter's words

Photo: Miami-Dade State Attorney's OfficeIs Cliff Berry Jr. still involved in a Port Everglades franchise? After people are convicted of felonies, they have to wear orange jumpsuits. After Cliff Berry, Inc., was convicted of a felony, it also made a wardrobe change -- into shirts bearing the brand new logo of Everglades Waste Removal Services.Or at least that's the outfit en vogue at the company's Port Everglades base, says a former Cliff Berry employee who gave an interview to Juice on Friday

  • Honey, I Rigged the Vote: Broward Power Couples Screw Each Other; Then They Screw Us

Can Ritter and Klenet hold on to the top spot on our corruption watch list?In light of the explosive findings Bob Norman's been posting over at Daily Pulp, it's time we identify a trend in Broward corruption: power-mad married couples, ruling the region like a king and queen, carving up our public money like it's their Thanksgiving turkey. For all the damage these duos inflict on the public trust, I don't feel an ounce of guilt about busting out Tom Ridge's trusty Homeland Security Terrorism
