  • Florida Home to Fresh-Squeezed... Handguns?

A study published last month by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a group lead by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, says that not only do lax gun laws lead to more murders, higher crime rates, and more law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, guns from those states are used more often in out-of-state murders. And as you may have guessed (assuming you were not shot while reading the first paragraph), Florida is at the top of the list of states where the most "crime guns" originat

  • The Infamous Holland Correction

Okay, I say a couple nice things about departed Sun-Sentinel reporter John Holland and the knives start flying. The Holland haters bring up an eight-year-old correction which one commenter calls "the longest and most embarrassing front-page retraction in the Sun-Sentinel's history." I remember that correction and I remember all the whispering about it and I remember all the hand-wringing and consternation. But mostly I remember thinking: The Sun-Sentinel is a gutless wonder. Here is the correct

  • Broward Man at Center of National Scandal in Philippines

Former Philippine President Joseph Estrada would have been "pleased" by the murder of a journalist, an affidavit taken in Florida claims. This February, 47-year-old Cezar Mancao went to the Philippine consulate in Fort Lauderdale to give a sworn affidavit. When the contents of his testimony were leaked this month to a Philippine news outlet, no one here seemed to notice, and nothing about it was reported in the U.S. press. His allegations, however, sent shock waves throughout the Philippines.

  • North Florida Murder, South Florida Evidence, Leads to North Pennsylvania Arrest

A multijurisdictional murder case started, it appears, when Broward sheriff's deputies responded to a Crimestoppers tip that a red Mazda truck left at the Greyhound bus stop in Fort Lauderdale was involved in a murder. The truck was registered to 76-year-old Tommy Lee Kellum of Lake City, Florida. A BSO detective phoned that county's sheriff's department to ask whether there was an open murder case involving Kellum. There wasn't, at least not until that later that day, when deputies approached K

  • In West Palm, Leaf-Blowing Man Makes Case for Limiting Scope of Justice

MartinAn arrest in a cold case is supposed to be an occasion for celebrating the enduring cause of justice. There is no statute of limitations (da-DUM!!) for murder. That applies even after you've left the state where it happened to start a new life a thousand miles away. Still, on one afternoon nearly 26 years after the last echo of the gun blast, you may be blowing leaves in front of some car dealership when a cop comes with an arrest warrant. That, according to police, is the story of Anthony

  • Double-Murder Suicide the Official Ruling in Palm Aire Condo Deaths

Still no word on exactly why Benjamin Schwartz gunned down his two neighbors on Friday before killing himself, but an investigation of the case confirmed that particular chain of events. From the Broward Sheriff's Office release:Ballistics tests done on evidence collected from the two adjacent condominium units confirmed the scenario, though it's still unclear what prompted Mr. Schwartz to kill Vincent Cairoli, 77, and Ed White, 67. BSO deputies went to the building just after 8:30 p.m. after a

An extra-spooky, Halloween Eve edition of the MJ:Junior Cesar, the 30-year-old man who was shot dead Wednesday night at a basketball court in Boynton Beach's Pence Park is the older brother of Jesse Cesar, who was 22 when he was murdered just before he could testify against a gang member accused in a Christmas Eve murder at the Boynton Beach Mall.
