  • 'Tis the Season for A Mara-cle!

During her 20-year reign as the grande dame of Hollywood, Mara Guilianti had many pet projects, but perhaps none that she adored more than the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center, a museum that moved from North Miami to downtown Hollywood last year, thanks in large part to Giulianti's hustle. But mostly her generosity. It was a Giulianti-led Hollywood City Commission that gave the museum a half-million dollar loan last year, and it was Giulianti who pushed for the city to turn that loan

  • Another Newspaper Falls Into Bankruptcy

The Minneapolis Star Tribune followed the Tribune Co. and went into Chapter 11 bankruptcy today. Remember, Miami Herald parent McClatchy, in the only good move it has made in several years, sold the Strib, as it is called, for $530 million back in 2006. The newspaper's story includes some interesting numbers:   In its filing, the newspaper listed assets of $493.2 million and liabilities of $661.1 million. Like most newspapers, the Star Tribune has experienced a sharp decline in print

  • No Drama in Hollywood

After the hero vanquishes the villain, it's usually our cue to leave the theater. And so it is with Hollywood politics. Peter Bober (right), the fresh-faced, sweet-talking protagonist who in lieu of a Bat-mobile drove a Segway, toppled the tyrannical regime of Mara Giulianti a year ago. Say what you will about Giulianti, whose faults were well-chronicled by this publication, at least she had passion. "When Mara wanted something done, she'd fight to the death," says one Hollywood observer. "I hav

  • Hollywood Mayor Bober: Fort Lauderdale, Give Us Our Sand!

Beach erosion has been a problem in South Florida at least since the Army Corps of Engineers created the Intracoastal Waterway last century.  Under natural circumstances, winds and waves push sand down the coast, gently and perpetually southward.  But wherever there's a man-made jetty that interrupts the coastline and provides an opening for boats to go in and out between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal -- like at Port Everglades, for instance -- the sand gets trapped on the no

  • Lobbyists a Wedge Issue in Hollywood

O'Sheehan voted to restrict lobbying in Hollywood.Maybe Hollywood Commissioner Beam Furr is right that an ordinance to ban private commissioner meetings with lobbyists is "unconstitutional." But it's still a shrewd move by Mayor Peter Bober and Commissioner Heidi O'Sheehan to champion the legislation. Or rather, to force their less savory colleagues to effectively vote for lobbyists -- a demographic despised only slightly less than sex offenders and journalists. Now in the next election, the chal
