  • Throwback Tuesdays: Yo Majesty--"Club Action"

There's something about the early music of Yo Majesty that will always have a soft spot in my heart. Back when this Tampa-based duo used to be a trio, Shunda K, Jwl B, and Shon B, were my favorite female MCs of 2007. They were butch, black, badass rappers who were sort of like a 2007 version of 2 Live Crew. And their music is just as crunk. Hell, they had songs called "Kryptonite Pussy." If that's not 2 Live Crew-esque, I dont' know what is. Yo Majesty had lot's of media attention that year

  • Paparazzi Unimpressed by Ambiguously Straight Gov

Don't you feel just a little sorry for the gawkers of St. Petersburg / Tampa? They've been waiting to get their place on the celebrity map forever! But no, Anna Nicole had to croak in the that other Seminole Hard Rock hotel. Today's Charlie Crist-Carole Rome wedding was supposed to be the cities' Big Celebrity Moment. But then Paps of the world responded with a collective meh! "Socialites only sort of hit our radar if they have reality shows, to be frank," said Jill Stempel, New York bureau chief

  • Ferguson: Lesbian Scene Is Hot in Delray

We're very well aware that Broward and Palm Beach counties do not draw high-voltage celebrities in the same way as L.A. or New York. (And if we forget, we always have Donald Trump to remind us.)  Yet we do sometimes marvel at the bizarre mix of notables that rumble through town.  We've got Rush Limbaugh, Vanilla Ice, and the Williams sisters as residents. Bruce Springsteen stops by to watch his daughter ride horses in Wellington; Dennis Rodman pops up at local clubs in drag; and who co

  • Alleged Bank Robber Takes "Freeze!" Order Literally

Today we learned that Florida is exporting guns for crimes in other states, and it appears Fort Lauderdale is also exporting armed robbers for crimes in other Florida cities.Three Fort Lauderdale men are among a foursome arrested in connection with the distinctly Grinch-ian crime of knocking over a credit union in Spring Hill (which is north of Tampa, some 270 miles from Broward) on Christmas Eve. The thieves made off with $88,000.Jerome Simmons (that's him above) was the last of the four suspec

  • The Swimsuit Competition: Tampa Bay Loses

Quit flaunting your chin, harlot. You're in Greater Tampa.Let's not get too demoralized over the national media ridiculing our corruption, which is rampant, pervasive, ubiquitous and all-encompassing. It could be worse. We could be in Pinellas County, where county officials are scrambling to cover the naughty bits of beachgoers, lest the region's tourists be scandalized. The article quotes a park supervisor who objects to the way some sunbathers employ hosery:There are men, he said, who will spor

  • Road to Super Bowl Goes Thru Lauderdale?

See you in Fort Lauderdale, hot stuff.I've been seeing an awfully lot of Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals paraphernalia in the Fort Lauderdale area. Two possible explanations:The locals are jumping on the bandwagon now that these teams are Super Bowl-bound.Steelers and Cardinals fans are flocking to South Florida because they're going to the game.Wait, No. 2 doesn't make sense. The game's in Tampa Bay.Well, either the Pittsburgh and Arizona faithful are really bad at geography, or they'

That's a trailer from a UPS-sponsored documentary about last year's Truck Driving Championships. This year, Hollywood is sending Florida's finest big rig pilot: Patrick Condon, who prevailed in the recent statewide competition in Tampa .Sadly, these championships are sanctioned by the American Trucking Associations, which means they reward safety, rather than dare-devilry. So instead of canyon jumping or jack-knifing, the drivers compete in events that could only thrill a warehouse manager: al

Yesterday in Boca Raton, demonstrating for health care reform. Now there's a thought! Also, interesting strategy not to mob a town hall meeting and chant about how we should deprive immigrants of health care.  Now compare that political participation with the style that health care opponents practiced this week in Tampa -- video after the jump.

  • Restaurant News: Plantation Hooks Bonefish, Gastropub Coming to WPB, Gold Medal Whine

    •    It's hard catching a real bonefish, but catching a Bonefish Grill will get even easier when the Tampa-based chain opens its 43rd Florida restaurant later this month, this one in Plantation. If you've been to one, you know the drill -- scarf some fried "Bam Bam Shrimp"; your fish, get it grilled, add a sauce; swill a glass or two of wine; and tell the kids to STFU while Mommy and Daddy try to eat at least one meal in peace. •    The old Spoto's Oyster Bar

flickr.com No pressure, Tim, it's only your brain. Though the University of Florida and coach Urban Meyer have been nothing but careful with their words, I don't think there was ever really a doubt that Tim Tebow would play in tonight's big game against LSU. This, just two weeks removed from a hellacious concussing hit that earned him an ambulance ride to the hospital in the middle of the game. The inevitability of this is even more disturbing considering the recent study comm

PhotobucketThe Donald, in legal hot waterWith mega swindlers like Madoff and Rothstein running rampant, a rapacious capitalist like Donald Trump is almost a sweetheart in comparison. But he does not come without flaws. The Donald faces litigation in Tampa and Fort Lauderdale for allegedly falsifying his role in the construction of two luxury towers. The $300 million Tampa project went bankrupt last year, and now buyers are planning to sue. They're outraged to learn that the tycoon merely lent
