Five South Florida Food-Related Events This Weekend: Rocco's Block Party, a Beer Bash, and More
With no Art Basel or Palm Beach Food and Wine Festival to dominate the headlines, it can seem like quiet times 'round these parts. But fear not. If you've got a desire to get out of the house this weekend and enjoy some food and drinks on the town, Clean Plate Charlie has found a few activities to keep oneself busy. After the jump, find a roundup of happenings this weekend in Broward and Palm Beach counties.
5. Cheap food and giveaways at Dickey's
In October, Boca Raton welcomed a new fast casual barbecue joint to town by way of Dickey's Barbecue Pit. Chairman of the company, Roland Dickey, Sr., will stop by the Boca franchise from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today (Friday) to give away 50 copies of a cookbook that he recently authored. The restaurant also will sell $1 pulled pork big barbecue sandwiches during that time.
4. Christmas in Spain cooking class
Chef Andy Trousdale will lead a holiday themed cooking class at Le Bistro in Lighthouse Point that explores the traditions of Christmas in Spain. The class will provide instruction on everything from tapas (ham, cheese, and chorizo with bread) to dessert (almond cookies), with several courses in between. The cost is $50 per person, which includes the class and lunch. Pay an extra $30 and get wine pairings to go along with the meal. The class is noon to 3 p.m. Saturday. Call 954-946-9240.
3. Left Hand Brewing Co. Milk Stout Nitro event at WOB
There is an art to correctly pouring a bottle of Left Hand Brewing Co.'s Milk Stout nitro, and it doesn't involve the careful tilting, pouring, and waiting (and tilting, pouring, and waiting) that goes into getting the perfect Guinness. The perfect nitro pour is fast and hard (see video below), and World of Beer Wellington will lead a synchronized pour tonight (Friday) at 8:15 sharp. The pour is part of the bar's celebration of the recent launch of milk stout nitro bottles in South Florida. Arrive early.
2. Holiday events (a few family-friendly and one not so much)
The annual Breakfast With Santa at Palm Beach Zoo gives harried parents a chance to chow down on a breakfast buffet while the kids hang out with Santa and visit with some of the zoo's more child-safe animals. The breakfast is 8:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, and 10 a.m. Sunday. Get more details via the Breakfast With Santa calendar listing.
Meanwhile, you can celebrate the Festival of Lights at Chanukah Under the Stars tonight (Friday) in Mizner Park. Food trucks will roll in at 5 p.m. to give attendees a few hours of leeway to dine before the services begin at 7:30 p.m. Trucks on site will be Bites Gatrotruck, Gene's Joint New York Style Deli, Moty's Grill, Tacofresh, The Big Ragu, VeggieXpress, and 4 Alarm Pizza. Fit Foodz cafe will be selling latkes.
Need a kid-free holiday adventure? Pangaea will host A Snowflake Fantasy (a winter themed party) on Saturday night with music by OB One plus Zhantra dancers decked out in furs. Call 954-581-5454 for table reservations.
1. Rocco's Fifth-Year Anniversary
Rocco's Tacos and Tequila Bar in West Palm Beach is celebrating its fifth birthday this weekend, and you know what that means: Tequila dancing and tequila hangovers. Dig into piles of fresh guac and swill a margarita or two at the anniversary party from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday. The party coincides with a block party for Vanilla Ice's Toys for Tots event. Bring a new, unwrapped toy and donate to the cause.
