Nothing beats cooking with fresh produce, and for one loyal customer, food doesn't get much fresher than what you'll find at Bedner's Farm Fresh Market in Boynton Beach.
So much so, this farm fan -- simply known as "Chef Johnny" -- will be offering his thanks this holiday season with a series of free "Cook for Life" cooking shows beginning this weekend. The theme: how to use less grease, oil, or butter to prepare flavorful, healthy meals while saving time and money.
On Saturday, December 11, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., farmgoers can
learn fast, easy ways to cook healthy meals with the produce available
at Bedner's.
After all, where else can you pick your own fruits and vegetables right
from the plant -- all grown on-site, bees and bugs included?
The 80-acre farm -- one of the few remaining family-owned and -operated
ones in South Florida -- has accumulated quite a few followers since its
grand opening to the public in March.
Among the most popular pick-your-own produce options: strawberries and
sunflowers, which became ripe for the picking last weekend, says part-family-owner Megan Bedner.
"Next week, our tomatoes should be ready for picking as well. We have
everything," she adds. "And what we don't grow here, we bring from local
farmers."
These days, it's not just the complimentary cooking shows that marketgoers
can find for free. The farm is also hosting a series of seasonal events,
including a visit from Santa on December 19 (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.).
On weekends, the farm is also host to a number of family-oriented
activities and vendors. South Florida residents can pick up a Fraser fir
tree for Christmas, pick their own produce, sample homemade ice cream
and caramel apples -- even go for a hayride.
For us, the trip out to State Road 7 is definitely worth the trek.
