In January 1979, Dennis and Ginny Maier opened Mr. M's Sandwich Shop in Dania Beach with the simple premise of serving the freshest sandwiches. After 34 years of whipping up some of the greatest sandwiches in town, their son, Paul Maier (also a Mr. M), has set up a second Mr. M's outpost only eight miles away in Davie.
Across the street from Nova Southeastern University, it's attracting a new customer base of hungry college students between classes. Other than the addition of the beer and wine that's expected to appear on the menu soon, everything (from the menu to the family in charge) has stayed the same.

According to Paul Maier, the decision to expand was really just opportune timing. A friend of the family was renting the space and reached out to the Maeir's. After almost 20 years of helping his parents run a bustling sandwich shop, Maier wanted to see if he could do it too.
"I wanted to start from scratch but still keep it exactly the same because it doesn't need to be different," Maeir says.
Like the first location, there are no computers and everyone takes orders by hand. While some of their staff are new, young college students, some familiar faces from the first outpost still show up behind the cash register.
Maier prides himself in the shop's ability to handle any order no matter how big or small. "It's really the volume of sandwiches we can make that separates us," he says. "One time a customer called us during lunch and asked for 90 subs to be ready in an hour. We had it ready in 45 minutes. And that was during the lunch rush."
For regulars from the first outpost, Maier says if you come in to the new spot you can order your usual, it should taste exactly the same. They still order their bread fresh every day from a nearby bakery, slice vegetables by hand, and cut the meat every morning.
For those that have never been he recommends "The Ultimate," a sub with your choice of three meats. Unless otherwise stated, all subs come served the Mr. M way with provolone, onions, green peppers, pickles, tomatoes, salt, pepper and a blended oil.
