Hoppy beers, spicy balls, and drink-slinging firefighters; all in all, not a bad week for dining and drinking in South Florida. After the jump, find a roundup of food and drink events -- including a lot of beer-oriented happenings -- in Broward and Palm Beach counties this week.
Food Trucks at Arts Park in Hollywood
The weekly food truck roundup at Arts Park in downtown Hollywood will include B.C. Tacos, Che Grill, Dim Ssam a Gogo, Mangia Mia, and Palate Party, among many others. The rally is 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and there's no cost to attend, but bring cash for the trucks.
Part three of the Tastings at the Shops at Pembroke Pines
The Shops at Pembroke Pines (527 SW 145th Terrace in Pembroke Pines) will host a tasting event from 6 to 8 p.m. with proceeds from ticket sales ($10 for presale/$15 at the door) benefiting the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer campaign. The theme of the event is "Put on Your Pink Bra" in support of the awareness efforts. Participants get a taste card for samples from restaurants in the shop, including Lime Fresh Mexican Grill, Village Tavern, Stir Crazy, and others.
Summer Hop Fest at Blind Monk
The Blind Monk will show some love for hoppy beers with a focus on a dozen high-hopped brews, including Dogfish Head's My Antonia, Cigar City Jai Alai IPA, and Bell's Two Hearted Ale. The drinking begins around 4 p.m.
Southern Tier Bier Dinner
It's not a German brewer, but Biergarten Boca Raton will devote a night to Southern Tier with a four-course pairing menu for $35 per person (plus tax and tip). Dishes include five-spice shrimp and braised baby bok choy served with Phin and Matt's Extraordinary Ale, or smoked beef brisket with 2XIPA. Call to reserve a spot at 561-395-7462.
Julia Child's birthday
Celebrate what would have been the 100th birthday for the woman who revolutionized the home cooking industry by making one of her classic recipes, like beef bourguignon or coq au vin. Joyeux anniversaire, Julia.
Cooking demo with Max's Grille executive chef
Patrick Broadhead, executive chef at Max's Grille in Boca Raton, will present a cooking demo at 6:30 p.m. at Publix Apron's Cooking School in Boca Raton. The demo is $40 per person and includes presentations of dishes like pan-seared jumbo lump crab cake and molasses brined and grilled pork chop. Register for a spot here.
Tunnel to Towers race kick-off bash
Organizers of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation run will hold a kick-off party from 6 to 9 p.m. at McSorley's Beach Pub in Fort Lauderdale. The cost is $10 per person and includes one drink with firefighters serving as guest bartenders. Get more information on the event here.
Meatball eating contest
Wicked Awesome Snackbar will host the Hot and Sweaty Meatball Eating Contest at 7 p.m. Winner gets one craft beer of every brew that the restaurant stocks. Read more about the event here.
