A disheartening email arrived at New Times this week, in which a reader informed us that Armando Alfano of Soya & Pomodoro was closing his hip, informal downtown Italian eatery and moving back to Italy. Thankfully the news isn’t true. Mr. Alfano considered doing so for personal reasons, but assures me that he changed his mind. “Soya is staying in town” he said. After three years of waiting for a downtown scene to emerge around his restaurant, Armando feels it’s finally coming together. “Downtown needs us now”, he says. “It isn’t the right time to leave. Things are starting to happen.” Summer hours for Miami New Times’ 2007 Best Downtown Restaurant are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, with dinner and live music on Thursdays and Fridays until midnight or 1:00 a.m. Come the fall, “Soya will be open five nights, or probably six nights”. If you haven’t yet been, you should make it a point to eat at this unique, local gem.--Lee Klein
