Ten Best Seafood Restaurants in Broward and Palm Beach Counties

Right after Alaska, Florida has the most coastline of any state in the union.

With 1,350 miles of ocean coastline and 8,436 miles of tidal coastline, which includes tidal estuaries, bays, and other bodies of water affected by pull of the moon, our fare peninsular has twice as much shoreline as any other state in the contiguous U.S.

With all that surrounding water, it should come as no surprise that seafood is a major part of most Floridian's diets -- or, at least, it should be.

Even so, finding a fresh piece of fish, straight-out-of-the-water stone crabs, live lobster, or sweet local shrimp, is not always the easiest task; much of the seafood food is frozen or imported from who-knows-where.

However, with a shift in dietary habits and a newfound consciousness of local and sustainably sourced products, good seafood restaurants in South Florida have grown.

10. Southport Raw Bar

There's something about a raw bar that has been around for ages, and has changed absolutely nothing. This waterfront Fort Lauderdale spot has been shucking and serving oysters to eager locals and tourists for more than 40 years -- and its still just as busy as ever. The spot has earned New Times' pick for Best Raw Bar more than four occasions. While the place is best known for its namesake items like oysters, clams, and Old Bay shrimp, it also serves up a wide selection of delicious cooked items, such as dolphin, New England clam chowder, and some of the best conch chowder you can find on this side of the Gulf Stream. If passed the test of generations, it's good enough for us.

9. Tarks of Dania Beach

Tarks has been a Dania institution since 1966, and the folks know local seafood as well as anyone in the business. The blue- and white-painted seafood counter is like a time-warp when you walk-in; a little slice of old Florida heaven. Take a seat at the counter -- that and a few tables out front are your only options -- and you're sure to go elbow-to-elbow with tattooed bikers and leather-skinned laborers, all enjoying Tarks' cheap beer, tasty bivalves, and delicious dive favorites like chicken wings and buffalo shrimp. Look, this isn't the seafood restaurant you take a date to with the intention of creating a good first impression; but if he or she likes it, you know you have yourself a keeper.

So, there was no way we could compile a list of seafood spots without a pick to represent the great Northeast. Here, you'll find the favorite regional beer as well as everything indicative of the area, such as steamers (medium-sized clams in the shell), whole-belly Ipswich clams, lobster rolls, and some of the finest New England chowder you can find this far south. 5. Blue Moon Fish Co.

With more than 17 years under its belt, this Intracoastal Waterway spot should be considered the grandfather of the upscale waterfront seafood restaurant. In order to stay in business that long, you have to be constantly striving to be at the top of your game. Since its inception, the restaurant has brought home numerous New Times awards, including Best Outdoor Dining, Best Seafood Restaurant, and Best Waterfront Dining. That doesn't mean that's all it deserves. With a $48.95-per-person all-inclusive brunch that includes a massive raw bar, budget-friendly happy hour, frequent wine dinners, and occasional cooking courses specializing in -- you guessed it -- fish and other sea creatures, it's no wonder it keeps racking up all the awards.

4. City Fish Market

Boca's City Fish Market is one of two City Fish Markets of the Atlanta-based Buckhead Life Restaurant Group and one of the group's 12 upscale eateries in Georgia and South Florida -- the equally appealing Chops Lobster Bar and Lobster Bar Sea Grille are also on its roster. While that might make it sound like a dreaded chain restaurant, let your taste-buds do the debating for you here. With around a dozen fishes prepared however you like, a nice selection of oysters and raw bar items, and composed dishes like the Hong Kong Combo ($29.95) with steamed Chilean sea bass and Atlantic salmon with sherry soy, spinach, ginger, and sticky rice and pecan crusted salmon trout ($23.50) with bourbon honey butter, whipped sweet potato, and steamed broccoli, you'll have a hard time arguing against eating here.

3. 3030 Ocean

Long hailed as one of the best places for seafood in Fort Lauderdale, 3030 Ocean has racked up numerous accolades. Over the years, New Times alone has awarded it everything from Best Chef - 2009 to Best Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale - 2006. Known for its clean, modern American approach, the restaurant offers light seafood and meats prepared in a manner that respects and highlights individual ingredients -- whether it be locally caught grouper, or farm-fresh veggies. In 2013 the restaurant lost its founder Dean James Max; however, his pupil, Paula DaSilva -- the restaurant's recipient for Best Celebrity Chef - 2009 -- is back, bringing with her some new albeit consistent takes on Max's fresh seafood preparations.

2. Sea Restaurant

In this nondescript strip-mall spot on East Commercial Boulevard, chef/owner Tony Sindaco pumps out a menu that is opposite of ordinary. Extraordinary dishes, from tuna Bolognese to braised black grouper, served with ever-changing but perfectly cooked accoutrements, will satisfy any seafood lover's craving -- and might convert a few haters. The mind-blowing effect totally makes sense given Sindaco's résumé; the award-winning chef spent time working in kitchens across the U.S. and Europe, including stints at Michelin 5-Star Palace Hotel in Gstaad, Switzerland, and the Five Diamond Helmsley Palace in New York City under Andre Rene. At Sea, Sindaco brings his haute approach to his casual 22-seat eatery just blocks from the beach. That's exactly why we nominated the spot New Times winner for Best Seafood - 2012.
