You've probably seen the promos for ABC's new show The Taste, which brings cook-offs into mainstream, prime time television with big names, a big set, and a recycled premise.
The Taste, which premieres tonight at 8 p.m., features four celebrity judges who vote for chefs' dishes by taking one bite of food. The catch? The judges cannot see what the chef looks or sounds like and can only judge by the merits of the food.
The winners of this initial round then go on to compete in teams "mentored" by these celebrity chefs. If the premise sounds familiar, you might just be a fan of NBC's The Voice, where celebrity judges choose the most talented performers sight-unseen.
The show, which features celebrity judges Nigella Lawson, Ludo Lefebvre, Top Chef: Miami's Brian Malarkey, and Anthony Bourdain, starts out tonight with an American-Idol style bloodbath, slashing and burning through 60 hopefuls to find the 16 contestants who will move on to future rounds.
Among the would-be kitchen warriors is Sarah Schiear, a food blogger and self-proclaimed home cook. Shiear was selected from over 10,000 contestants to fly to Los Angeles and woo Tony, Ludo, Malarkey, and Nigella with one delicious bite of food. Schiear will find herself competing against professionals, as well as amateurs, since the show features chefs at all levels of proficiency vying for one of the sweet 16 spots.
We're tuning in to root for our home town girl and fellow blogger -- and to find out what Bourdain and Lawson feel about her one big bite at stardom. Here's a sneak peek at the show:
