As the self-proclaimed unofficial LaSpada's Original Hoagies correspondent, I'm surprised I hadn't made you guess this spot earlier in the game.

When I got the chance to mention them in our annual 100 Favorite Dishes countdown, it took me longer to decide which sandwich to write about than to actually write the post. The monster may have won, but that doesn't mean the Italian Special isn't still a favorite among customers. Manager Phil Kappes says more than 70 percent of customers still prefer the Italian. Choose your hoagie how you wish, but the only way you will leave disappointed is if you leave without eating.

This Lauderdale-by-the-Sea store -- the first of four -- has been slinging sliced meat for 38 years. Since its South Florida inception, it has opened three more stores -- one in Boca Raton -- and is set to open a Fort Lauderdale location in May.
