At 36 years old, Davie native Mitchell Waas is an elder statesman of South Florida’s dance community. While the fickle ravers have come and gone since the mid-’90s, Waas and a few other hometown stalwarts want Florida to be ground zero to — as he says through messages on MySpace — “usher in a new renaissance for the global electronic music community.” Once a house party thrower, Waas has turned his Euphoria Project promotion outfit into one of the exclusive sources for large-scale events.

His latest bash, Ethereality, might just break him statewide. With his impetus to unify the splintered underground dance culture, Waas is gathering established DJs and crate-digging neophytes from trance, breakbeat, EBM, and house music backgrounds. The two-level Club XIT once again emerges as a premier dance venue by hosting this late-night event. Urban J unveils an acid-funk live set, along with Speechless and industrial DJ 23 on vinyl duty in the electro-breaks room. The more upbeat second room features straight-beat house sets and polished trance from Rafal, Deep End alum Mike Miro, and Positive J, among others. There’s a whole new crop of revelers who treat this music like it never went out of style, undoubtedly giving diehards like Waas a sense of fulfillment. Perhaps the Renaissance begins here after all.

Euphoria Project presents Ethereality, from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Saturday, June 25, at Club XIT, 219 N. 21st Ave., Hollywood. Eighteen and over welcome. $10 cover all night long. Call 954-822-2043.
