It seems that the raves of the past have devolved into more streamlined lounge fare or $30-a-head South Beach outings. But like a strobe-induced blast from the past, an event like High Fidelity appears on the scope, and from the unlikeliest of places.
Since grunge doesn’t count anymore, the Northwest usually embraces indie rock. But according to promoter/DJ Charlie Moore, dance music is prevalent under the gray skies. “There’s a big scene out here, especially in Seattle and Portland,” he says. Moore, along with partners like Jim Steele, started the Northwest Breaks Alliance as proof. “We started Northwest Breaks seven and a half years ago just to support breaks and house,” he explains.
Although Florida is mostly uncharted territory, NW Breaks is ready to stake its claim with High Fidelity, a massive gathering at Boynton Beach’s Ovation. Featuring two dance floors, a game room, several artists — including crowd favorite Kelly Reverb — and even laser light shows, this event reminds one of the guilt-free glory days, 30-inch JNCOs and all. “We’ve never really played Florida before, so I’m most definitely looking forward to it,” Moore says. What can I say? So am I.
Twenty-thousand watts of sound will rock High Fidelity, starting at 9 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at Club Ovation, 3637 S. Federal Hwy., Boynton Beach. Featured are national artists/DJs like Kelly Reverb, Miyagi, and James Steele, and a live performance by Miami’s Devine and Emily Play. All ages are welcome.
