For a band that deserves to have at least a little bit of a chip on its shoulder, these guys certainly don’t. Some of Spitalfield’s members come from hardcore backgrounds, which initially earned them flak for their unabashed affinity for pop. That’d be enough to make some people justifiably defensive, but they got over it. Like their music, this Chicago four-piece just keeps chugging along. Though energetic and urgent, their latest album, Remember Right Now, doesn’t come across as aggressive. Instead, Right Now plays like one continuous, sober meditation on growth and forward progress. In an effort to go beyond “standard relationship stuff,” Spitalfield crafted the album as one “full thought.” Call it existential emo for the even-tempered. — Saby Reyes-Kulkarni
