I’m such a disappointment to my mother. She was an art dealer for a few years and actually knows a little something about art. But me, I can barely tell the difference between Picasso and Pissarro, and the Monet versus Manet smackdown is lost on me. If you’re in the same boat — i.e., the kind of art that you appreciate features Elvis and Scarface playing cards, is rendered on velvet, and looks best under a black light — then you might want to consider broadening your horizons and heading over to the Shops at Boca Center in Boca Raton this weekend for the 23rd Annual Boca Fest.

You’ll be able to browse paintings, sculpture, jewelry, photography, and more, all produced by leading local, regional, and national artists. And they won’t just be selling their work; they’ll be at the event all weekend to answer questions and help art Neanderthals begin their journey of evolution (hint number one: It’s a “painting,” not a “picture”). Admission to the show is free, which leaves you no excuse to keep buying your art from trucks in gas station parking lots. Boca Fest runs from 10 to 5 on Saturday and Sunday at 5250 Town Center Circle in Boca Raton. Visit artfestival.com, or call 954-472-3755.

Sat., Jan. 9, 10 a.m.; Sun., Jan. 10, 10 a.m., 2010
