Some people pride themselves on their ability to paint like Matisse. Others pride themselves on their ability to cook like Emeril Lagasse. And still others are proud of their ability to combine dialog like Hemingway’s with Chuck Palahniuk’s wit and sarcasm into a novel.
The latter person is specifically Casey Corine Hutson, a Texas transplant and first-time novelist. Her first story, Kismet, details a late-20-something who finds out her boyfriend is really a domestic terrorist “hell-bent on destroying her beloved Portland, Oregon.” You can meet with the author and other book lovers at 8 p.m. Friday at Undergrounds Coffeehaus (2743 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Fort Lauderdale). You can also pick up a copy of Kismet and have it signed, chat up Hutson and find out what inspires her, and — who knows? — it could be worth something some day.
