Used to be that when you saw somebody exposing his or her bum on
Biscayne Boulevard between 65th and 75th streets, you were in the
presence of a certified street walker. But these days, the recently
designated MiMo historic district has classed up its image, and the
only ass crack you’ll be privy to on Sunday is the famous tush of
Miami’s Coppertone Girl. The sun-tan sign erected in 1958 was donated
to MiMo and recently given new, green-friendly LED lights to keep her
behind lit. The Coppertone Girl is one of the highlights of a walking
tour that will kick off the inaugural Art Boulevard Festival.

The festival will feature local artists, plenty of upscale eats, and
live music. Its proximity, in time and place, to many major Art Basel
events put pressure on organizers to come through with a legitimate
event. Cochair Robert Hernandez says MiMo is up to the challenge.
“Real interaction with artwork and artists themselves,” he says,
distinguishes the event from other local festivals. Hernandez adds
that those in attendance can get into the art act by participating in
creating a community mural. Big-name restaurants like Michy’s and Red
Light will have booths, and the event will conclude with a holiday
tree-lighting ceremony. The walking tour starts at the Coppertone Girl
(7301 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) at 10:30 a.m., and the festival runs from
noon to 6 p.m. The main festival grounds will be at 7500 Biscayne
Blvd. The event is free,
but $10 donations for the walking tour are encouraged. Call
305-668-0001, or visit
