A gift from the Swiss, dadaism never made much sense — please, do not defend it. Dadaism is the shortest section of the Norton Anthology of World Literature for a reason. One Gertrude Stein poem is quite enough. , Still, it’s not like dadaism didn’t have its place or purpose. It presaged an era of epic artistic exploration in literature, art, and performance art. Like a baby learning how to use its fingers and toes, the artistic world was stumbling its way blindly into new areas of expression, and every artist who has lived since has benefited from it. Such artists like the crafties who will be displaying their wares at this month’s “Dada Bazaar” craft fair, for instance. Art is reinvention, after all, so expect to see such things as neckties made into water-bottle totes and Twister mats made into beach bags.
This month’s fair will take place from 8 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Thursday. Dada (52 N. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach) will serve up drinks, food, and live music to keep you shopping — and supporting your local craft community — late into the night. Cover is free, but the fine handmade crafts will cost you. Call 561-330-DADA.

Thu., May 5, 8 p.m., 2011
