Forget all those stereotypes of drug use, dirt, and promiscuous mattress romps — if there is one thing hippie culture should be remembered for, it’s the uncompromising protest spirit. That energy helped change the country’s attitude toward sex, politics, and war. But as our culture grows lazier, Americans trade off standing in picket lines to placing political bumper stickers on their gas-guzzlers. In a time of war, does anyone really think their fender’s mantra will cause someone to reach a rush hour enlightenment?
Thankfully, another hippie staple, protest music, is still alive and kicking. Take the new concert film CSNY Déjà Vu, from inveterate flower children Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. The doc follows the band on its “Freedom of Speech ́06 Tour” as it crosses through blue and red states, singing classic tunes like “Ohio,” and more modern and direct ones like “Let’s Impeach The President.” Sing along with the old boys when the documentary plays this Sunday at the Lake Worth Playhouse (713 Lake Ave., Lake Worth); it may even inspire you to put a few more stickers on your car.
