Pistols. Swallows. Brass Knuckles. While they’re all iconic clipart and endless fodder for regrettable tattoos — they still can’t hold a rusty Bic lighter’s flame to the always-appropriate human skull. Think about it. That thing will never go out of style. Whether it’s a reminder of death’s inevitability, an image for a secret society for elite Yale students, or an effigy for pirates, the skull is perhaps the most used image in existence. But this doesn’t mean there aren’t worthwhile artistic variants still to be seen. Enter the “Skull Sessions” art show opening on Friday at Bear and Bird Boutique and Gallery (4566 North University Drive, Lauderhill). Over 100 local artists, including favorites like Helena Garcia, Nathan Lumm and Todd Nolan, will be exhibiting skull works. The show displays through November 17, but tonight’s free opening reception runs from 7 to 10 p.m. Call 954-748-0181, or visit www.bearandbird.com.

Oct. 26-Nov. 17, 7 p.m., 2007
