Georgia rapper Future has reached a sort of perfect commercial balance by doing nothing particularly new but doing it all in a completely distilled way. He boasts a flow that’s Southern but not too Southern; lyrical content that’s rough around the edges but not too rough; and a sing-song style of vocals that’s part rap, part chant. His references to promethazine syrup and Scarface are well-worn, but it all works, especially with the addition of another artist for flavor. That’s why Future’s current single, “Magic,” featuring TI, continues to hold steady on the Billboard Hot 100. He performs here alongside Pusha T, who, as half of the Clipse, probably deserves to headline — but nobody ever said the rap industry was fair.
