Where can you see classic films that are nothing short of excellence? The Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale will feature a one-time screening of the movie based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Alice Walker, The Color Purple. Directed by Steven Spielberg, this R-rated movie follows the trials and tribulations of a young African-American woman named Celie (Whoopi Goldberg), from 1909 to 1949. Celie’s unforeseen journey begins at the moment she becomes pregnant by her father at age 14.
Her situation is further complicated when her father snatches their children at childbirth and forces her to marry a local widower named Albert Johnson (Danny Glover). One of Spielberg’s most acclaimed films, this story hauntingly describes the abuse endured by poor African-American women during the early 1900s. Tasked to overcome the obstacles of racism, sexism, and poverty in the South, Celie finds solace and builds her self-worth through her friendship with two female confidants.
