Literary genius is not reserved exclusively for the written word. As singer/songwriters and spoken-word artists can attest, the craft of literary expression goes beyond the bleeding ink on the page. The power of words can shine through the light of blending writing and performance, a challenge a crew of Broward teen poets plan to take on at Word Up! Poetry Slam this Saturday.
To enter the slam, high school-aged word masters in Broward County auditioned, and then the top-tier candidates were put through a mini-boot camp to whip their proverbial chops into shape. The competition will feature original poems told by teens who will reflect on a gamut of personal struggles, familial meltdowns, love and heartache, and issues like discrimination. Poems will leave audiences oozing with inspiration. Now in its fourth year, Word Up! will be staged at 7 p.m. Saturday at Sunrise Civic Center Theatre, located at 10610 W. Oakland Park Blvd., Sunrise. General admission costs $5. Call 954-747-4646, or visit sunrisefl.gov.

Sat., Nov. 17, 7 p.m., 2012
