No. 35: Nakjikuksu From Myung Ga Tofu & BBQ
It’s the culinary equivalent of Mr. T, this dish — intimidating, brash, loud, and, ultimately, lovable. It’s nakjikuksu, or spicy udon with octopus as it’s known to the rest of us, a
hellishly red noodle concoction that’s one of the more popular Korean selections at Weston’s Myung Ga. Those udon, so thick and soft they’re almost creamy, are absolutely caked in a sauce made from brick-red Korean chili paste that looks so mean and angry that it hisses and pops on the skillet beneath it. It’s tossed with a spicy sauté of onions, carrots, zucchini, and (eep!) octopus, a protein that only adds to the intimidation factor. But while you might think you’re getting a furiously hot (and inediblely chewy) dish of Andrew Zimmern-esque proportions, what you actually taste is more akin to Korean soul food. One bite of the comforting, homey stuff and those storm clouds will part and your worries will lift. Except, of course, for one key concern: “How do I eat this and not get red sauce all over my shirt?”
