Of Montreal’s Kevin Barnes will make a special visit to the Lake Worth community on August 7 for the day-long, bang-out Lake Worth-It 2010 fest. A new album from the Athens, Georgia resident and his band titled False Priest is scheduled for release in the fall. Every bit is a piece of good news, but no head-scratchers.
However, according to a recent interview with Pitchfork, Barnes decided to take the aforementioned new album in a slightly different direction — one that makes Of Montreal’s orchestral glam-pop thump like nothing ever done before. After Jon Brion (Fiona Apple, Kanye West, P.T. Anderson movies) was finished with it, and two of the real voices of R&B/soul today, Solange Knowles and Janelle Monae, made appearances, descriptions of this album sound (we haven’t heard it) a lot like the R&B-leaning directions of recent Dirty Projectors and a couple of double-letter outfits, jj and the XX. Barnes cites A Tribe Called Quest and Dr. Dre as influences here. Over here, a few violent scratches off the top of this dome, to say the least.
Pitchfork: So will this be trunk music, then?
KB: That was definitely the thinking: People all of a sudden realize
what kind of car stereos they have. It’s one of those things where if
you listen to it on your laptop, you’re not going to hear it, but if
you listen to it in the club, then you’re really going to hear
it; you’re really going to feel it. Most cars have pretty decent sound
systems nowadays, so you’d hear it there, too. That’s the funny thing
about when you’re mixing, trying to make it sound good in every
situation. But there’s certain limitations, especially with laptop
speakers or something coming out of your iPhone; that’s not going to
sound that great.
So, if/when we have a chance to discuss the music he has planned for Lake Worth-It, the first question — if not “will you be wearing a diaper?” — is definitely regarding the fidelity of the speakers in Lake Worth’s Bryant Park.
