Here at County Grind, we have two favorite Minnesotans: The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn, and our very own Reed Fischer. The two native Twins fans have been connected previously — mainly because Fischer interviewed Finn prior to their performance in South Florida earlier this year. But could that be an underlying explanation for Finn’s just-released Minnesota Twins anthem “Don’t Call Them Twinkies”?
We found it rather appropriate that this song was released the same week that Fischer left our beloved Sunshine State temporarily to cover some locals’ treks up north.
Finn joined a baseball-themed side project super group called The Baseball Project — which includes members of R.E.M. and the Dream Syndicate
— to write and sing the anthem that celebrates The Twins becoming the
first team to clinch their division this season. “Don’t Call Them
Twinkies” starts off with roaring electric guitars and psychedelic
influences. After that, Finn
goes in to talking about the Twins temporarily, then sings “He’s a grown
man/ He’s a good man … Please don’t call them twinkies!” Hmmm.
Minnesota Public Radio released the track late afternoon yesterday. We definitely see the parallelism, but do you? Finn name drops eight Minnesota cities, two neighborhoods, two streets, nine Twins players, and two coaches, but alas, no Fischer. What gives?
Check out the track below, and tell us what you think.
