NBA free agent LeBron James announced tonight that he’ll be joining the Miami Heat in South Beach, apparently declaring a new home for South Florida’s basketball team.

LeBron’s announcement was made live on ESPN in a chatty town-hall-type discussion, with James waiting to make his decision until about four minutes in. Finally, he declared: “This fall I’m going to take my talents to South Beach and join the Miami Heat.”For those who have been to the American Airlines Arena, you know that it’s decidedly west

of South Beach, 3.7 miles to be exact.

Sure an Akron bred b-baller can be excused for this geographical
slip. But perhaps it was a Freudian slip South Beach style. Maybe, like
many, when James thinks South Florida he thinks of busting onto the
beach scene with his infamous Cleveland entourage, champagne rooms,
Latin pool dance parties, and white powder that’s not on the beaches. Or
maybe James knows something we don’t. The South Beach Heat does have a
ring to it.
