Here’s what’s happening in South Florida this Thursday morning:

  • On the jailhouse phone, 15-year-old Wayne Treacy talks to his parents about living in Key West after serving time for nearly beating to death Josie Lou Ratley at a Deerfield Beach school bus stop in March. [Sun-Sentinel]
  • Hollywood eye doctor Alan Mendelsohn is now facing charges of tax fraud in addition to those for lying to federal agents and fraud in connection with his role as a major Republican fundraiser. His criminal trial is set for January 2011. [Miami Herald]
  • Finally, a tentative agreement between striking pilots and the Miramar-based Spirit Air, which will resume flights Friday. [WPLG-10]
  • In Boynton Beach, a pregnant woman was attacked Wednesday night with a civilian taser and a box cutter. It’s not clear what triggered the attack. Two people have been arrested, and police are looking for two more suspects. [Palm Beach Post]
  • A third suspect has been arrested in a Tuesday-night chase and shootout between passengers of a Jeep Cherokee and Boca police. Robert Alvarez, who was found at his parents’ home in Greenacres on Wednesday night, reportedly ran from the vehicle after its driver rammed a police car. One of the Jeep’s occupants was wounded in the shootout with police. [WPBF-25]
