As we said yesterday, it was pretty impossible for Mitt Romney to catch up to Obama here in Florida, even as close as the tally was.
And, apparently, the Mittbot and his campaign agree and have officially conceded Florida.
Florida’s 29 electoral votes gives Obama a 332 to 206 lead over the RoboRomney.
Exhale, Florida. WE DIDN’T TOTALLY RUIN AN ELECTION!
Says Florida Romney campaign head Brett Doster, via statement:
“The numbers in Florida show this was winnable. We thought based on our polling and range of organization that we had done what we needed to win. Obviously, we didn’t, and for that I and every other operative in Florida has a sick feeling that we left something on the table. I can assure you this won’t happen again.”
Even though the final tally means nothing because Obama already gained the electoral votes to be declared the winner, this is still a pretty big deal.
Aside from the usual Florida clusterfucking of the votes (that’s how we roll!), the big news here is Florida has gone to Obama twice now, in 2008 and now in 2012.
Does this mean Florida is now to be considered a “purple state” going forward?
It’s tough to tell. But Obama won the Hispanic vote here, and that’s a pretty big deal.
Earlier today, Obama’s campaign manager, Jim Messina, told reporters that they expected the president to be “the official winner of Florida” sometime today.
The final tally is expected to be certified on November 20.
