If political pundits weren’t so busy harping on the so-called immigration crisis, they might take a few steps back and see the bigger issues at play – namely, the growing economic challenge posed by China. For most Americans, China’s as foreign as a country can be. But what the mass media overlooks, the art world explores. The Boca Raton Museum of Art (501 Plaza Real, Boca Raton) has two offerings on display — “Documenting China: Contemporary Photography and Social Change” and “Edward Burtynsky: The China Series.” The former features works by seven Chinese photographers, many of which compare the country’s urbanization with its agrarianism roots; other photos are of a more personal nature, such as Jiang Jian’s intriguing family snapshots. Burtynsky’s large-scale photographs are more focused on China’s industrialization, from images of workers in textile mills to abandoned manufacturing plants – neither of which you’re likely to see on the nightly news anytime soon.
