There’s something unsettling about stretching and curving and lifting your body in unnatural, demanding ways. At least that’s what you tell yourself when you don’t want to hit the gym. Well, local contortionist Jade Goddess shapes her body in all sorts of unpleasant but jaw-dropping positions for performances across South Florida. This weekend, she’ll bend for your viewing pleasure at Auteur Explosion, the monthly carnival for local creative types. Auteur Explosion is one part of the ever-growing cultural smorgasbord in the Broward/Palm Beach area. The mini-festival shakes the Fort Lauderdale arthouse Cinema Paradiso (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale) this weekend with Jade Goddess as well as its regular offering of bands, art, and films by local artists. Miami quartet Pretty Please will open the night at 9 p.m. with its synth-heavy, breezy indie-pop, followed by Casual Suspects and Mind You. Films created during Underlab Studio’s 48-hour Film Project, for which filmmakers had to write, shoot, and edit during a 48-hour window, will be presented at 11:30 p.m. Admission costs $7. Call 954-525-3456, or visit fliff.com.

Sat., Aug. 22, 9 p.m., 2009
