Picture Stitch Bird Workshops as a sort of punk rock take on craft circles: A bunch of highly creative people who’ve taken dusty, nostalgic craftwork and reappropriated it for themselves. At past shows, they’ve wielded that DIY attitude to create durable and fashionable wallets out of plastic grocery bags, turned old eyeglasses into wickedly cute brooches, and formed quirky stuffed animals from recycled mats. Cool stuff, no doubt; but the latest event, the Halloween Edition Special FX Makeup Workshop, promises to be even cooler-ier.

Learn how to make realistic, prosthetic scars, bullet wounds, and molds for that disgusting Halloween costume you’ve been piecing together from 1 p.m. to 5:30 today at Bear and Bird Gallery (Upstairs at Tate’s Comics, 4566 N. University Dr., Lauderhill). Or you can find out firsthand what the perfect ratio of corn syrup to coloring is for flawless fake blood. Two local FX pros, RIP Odebralski and Firepixi, will teach the workshop, so you can be sure the material is going to be as legit as it is messy. Says Bear and Bird’s Amanda Magnetta: “I don’t want it to look like Carrie’s prom night or anything, but this is potentially the messiest workshop we’ve done yet.” For $25, you’ll get a seat at the circle, plus goodies to take home and experiment with yourself. Space is limited to just 14 peeps, so the best way to stay in the know and register early is to sign up for the newsletter at bearandbird.com.
